The Department of Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics was created on August 26, 2015 on the basis of former departments of Theoretical and General Electrical Engineering and Automated Electric Drive. Since September 2017, it has been named after Professor Volodymyr Ovcharov. Nowadays the department is headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Serhii Kvitka.

Educational, methodological and scientific work at the department is carried out by 8 scientific and pedagogical lecturers, including one professor, six associate professors, and one assistant.

The lecturers of the department conduct training sessions for full-time and part-time students of higher education in accordance with the educational and professional programs in Electrical power industry, electrical engineering and electromechanics of the first (Bachelor’s) degree and the second (Master’s) degree (qualification: degree in Electrical power industry, electrical engineering and electromechanics) in the speciality 141 Electrical power industry, electrical engineering and electromechanics, branch of knowledge 14 Electrical engineering; in specialities 208 Agroengineering and 133 Industrial mechanical engineering – the first Bachelor’s level of higher education. Students of the third educational and scientific level are trained to obtain the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

The lecturers of the department teach the following academic disciplines: Theoretical basics of electrical engineering, Electronics and microcircuit engineering, Control and measuring devices with the basics of metrology, Electric machines, Fundamentals of electric drive, Theoretical basics of automation, Microprocessor technology, Electric drive of production machines and mechanisms, Computer-integrated technologies in automation of electrotechnical complexes, Design of electrotechnical equipment and others.

The main functions of education are acquisition of theoretical knowledge, skills and practical skills; orienting students to the development of individual cognitive potential, creative and professional abilities with an emphasis on self-education.

A high level of student knowledge is achieved through proactive teaching strategies and methods; consideration of specific industrial situations; independent work of students using computer technologies. The specified forms of active learning are supported by packages of complex tasks and application programs. All the educational and methodological complexes of disciplines are placed in the free access zone for faculty students on the Educational portal of Dmytro Motornyi Tavria State Agrotechnological University.

The department pays considerable attention to the scientific publishing activities. Author teams are actively working on tutorials, study aids, reference books, and monographs.

The department has a powerful material and technical base, an experienced teaching staff, a developed computer network; many years of experience in educational, scientific and pedagogical work. This determines the training of specialists at the highest professional qualification level and ensures their competitiveness in the labour market, activates creative, professional and social activities to enrich the intellectual potential of the nation.

Students acquire practical experience from highly qualified specialists of leading energy, machine-building and processing enterprises in Melitopol and the southern region of Ukraine. There they learn progressive methods of operation and maintenance of energy equipment in real conditions and have the opportunity to participate in research work.

The staff of the department simultaneously performs the functions of education, training and mental development of students. The content of educational work is aimed at raising a holistic, harmoniously developed specialist with a modern level of professional training and a broad outlook, an independent level of general, national and legal culture.

The staff of the department takes an active part in a state-budget scientific research programs.  In 2016-2020, the work was carried out under the program “Resource-energy-saving modes of energy transmission and transformation in the agro-industrial complex” (state registration number 0116U002726). In the period from 2021 to 2025, the scientific work of the department has been conducted under the program “Resource-energy-saving operating modes of electrotechnical complexes” (state registration number 0121U109980).

The purpose of these scientific research programs is to increase the reliability of power electrical equipment, electromechanical systems; conserve and reduce the electricity costs.

The directions of the department’s innovative activities are the following: development of new energy transmission technologies, implementation of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies, and development of alternative energy sources.

Field of application: devices for diagnosing and protecting power electrical equipment are intended to be used in agro-industrial production, processing industry, and water supply.

The staff of the department presents the results of its scientific activity at international and Ukrainian conferences and has a lot of publications in scientific collections of Ukraine and abroad, including the publications registered in scientific and metric databases such as Scopus and Web of Science.

Students are actively involved in the research work by the tutors through participating in research groups, where their scientific potential is revealed. The results of their participation are reflected in coursework, qualification projects and Master’s theses, in scientific publications and patents, reports at scientific and practical conferences and seminars, etc.

Therefore, almost all the university graduates are employed and work at various enterprises and organizations, regardless of their branch affiliation, forms of ownership and management. Managers of enterprises and organizations note their high qualification level and responsible attitude to their duties. They emphasize that graduates widely use the knowledge acquired at TDATU, show initiative and interest, skilfully apply knowledge in practice.
