The department has always kept up with the times, introducing new and progressive things into the educational process. In recent years, the work of the department’s staff has been aimed at creating and implementing a universal computerized, adapted to the Bologna process, fundamental-theoretical, practically oriented system of developmental teaching of disciplines.

The second ancestor of the Professor Volodymyr Ovcharov Department of Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics was the Department of Automated Electric Drive, established on January 22, 1979, by order of the Rector of the Melitopol Institute of Agricultural Mechanization No. 62-U by dividing the Department of Electric Power Application in Agriculture into two separate scientific and pedagogical units – the Department of Automated Electric Drive (AED) and the Department of Electric Power Application in Agriculture (EPAA). Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor H.N. Nazarian was appointed Head of the Department AED, who worked in this position until 1999. The staff of the department was determined in the amount of ten teachers, among whom H.N. Nazarian and B.V. Zaitsev had a degree Candidate of Technical Sciences and held the positions of Associate Professors. This team took on the entire burden of preparing the relevant lecture courses and creating a laboratory base to support the educational process. The first enrollment of students in this specialization was carried out in the 1979-1980 academic year. The hard work of the team was crowned with success and the first graduation of 25 electrical engineers took place in 1984.

During the time of H.N. Nazarian’s leadership, the qualitative composition of the department changed. The new staff was replenished by the graduates of the department – R.V. Kushlyk (1987), Ye.P. Masiutkin (1988), A.V. Pyrozhok (1993), S.V. Halko (1994), V.I. Hanaba (1995). The material base was growing – special attention was paid to the creation of modern laboratories of electric machines and electric drive. The laboratories of the department allowed to conduct classes in many courses and perform research work. At that time, the laboratories of the department were among the best in the Soviet Union in terms of their equipment, versatility and operational capabilities. H.N. Nazarian, B.V. Zaitsev, P.V. Kovalenko, V.T. Diordiiev, A.A. Katiukha and others made a lot of efforts to build and install the equipment of the laboratories.

In 1996, the department founded a full-time postgraduate program in the scientific specialty 05.09.16 – Application of electrical technologies in agricultural production.

Since 1999, the department has been headed by Associate Professor Katyukha A.A. (a graduate of the Department AED of MIAM. The prerogative of the department in these years was the development of the methodological, material and technical base of the department, the introduction of new disciplines in the educational process, in particular, “Energy Saving and Energy Management in the Agroindustrial Complex”. In September 2008, under the leadership of A.A. Katiukha, the department started teaching disciplines in the credit-module system in accordance with the Bologna Agreement.
