The Department of Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Technologies, previously named The Department of Application of Electrical Energy in Agriculture, was organized in September 1952 in Melitopol Institute of Agriculture.
In 1988 the department changed its name to the Department of Electrotechnology, in 1998 the name changed to the Department of Energy, since 2007 – the Department of Electrified Technologies of Agricultural Industry, and in 2015 the Department Electrotechnology and Thermal Processes was created.
The department received its modern name in 2022, in order to optimize the educational process and transfer scientific and pedagogical workers and employees on the basis of the reorganized departments of electrical technologies and heat processes, power engineering and automation, electrical engineering and electromechanics, through their unification, to create Professor Volodymyr Ovcharov Department of Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics and the Department of Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Technologies.
During all the years of its existence, the department has been developing in educational and scientific directions, mastering the modern achievements of scientific and technical progress.

Educational work

The department trains specialists in Electric power engineering, electrical engineering and electromechanics of higher education degrees Bachelor, Master, and also works with students of the specialities Industrial mechanical engineering, Agroengineering. A priority role in the organization of the educational process at the department is given to the implementation of new teaching methods, information technologies, organization of independent and research work of students that allows training of specialists at a high professional level. Hypertext technology which is implemented on the Educational Portal of Dmytro Motornyi Tavria State Agrotechnological University has opened up new possibilities for the use of information technologies in the teaching of disciplines. This determines the need to improve qualifications in the field of information technologies that allow bringing traditional forms of education closer to modern requirements.
The leading disciplines of the department are electrical technologies, basics of designing electrification systems, heat engineering, basics of energy management and energy audit, energy saving and use of renewable energy sources, electric lighting and irradiation, basics of power supply, operation and repair of electrical equipment, wind energy.
The department has a powerful specialized educational and laboratory base. The necessary modern equipment in the laboratories of the department makes it possible to present the obtained results of laboratory research in empirical and graphic forms, giving an explanation of various physical phenomena.

Scientific research work

Employees of the department take an active part in the state-budget scientific research program. The results of scientific research are reported by graduate students and teachers at scientific conferences. The most important research results are published in specialized scientific publications – Proceedings of TDATU and the electronic publication Scientific Bulletin of TDATU, journals that are included in international scientometric databases, in particular Web of Science, Scopus and others. All-Ukrainian scientific and practical internet conference “Modern problems of innovative development of electrical engineering” held at the department with the involvement of leading scientists has become traditional.

More than 150 patents for inventions and utility models have been obtained.

The department holds round tables, seminars on the issues of power engineering, electrical engineering and electromechanics with invitations from production representatives.

Scientific works of the department are demonstrated at scientific and technical exhibitions and implemented in the farms of Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

Scientific and research activity of the department makes it possible to identify the most capable, talented and inclined for research work students. Scientific research of the research groups is carried out on modern problems of using electric energy in the form of electric fields and electric current, its preliminary transformation into other types of energy (light, thermal, magnetic and acoustic) for direct impact on biological objects and products as well as increasing the efficiency of thermal energy use in thermal technology installations and devices.

The results of writing scientific articles, participation in All-Ukrainian Olympiads, All-Ukrainian contests of student scientific works, and scientific conferences testify to the high level of students’ training. Active implementation of scientific ideas occurs through invention. According to the results of the students’ work, in cooperation with the instructors of the department, more than 120 patents for utility models have been obtained.

The results of scientific and research work are actively used in the educational process, in lecture courses, in the execution of diploma projects.

Educational work of instructors with students

The educational work with students is an important component of the department activity. Curators of academic groups are appointed to assist students in forming a student group, conducting individual educational work, clarifying students’ problems, providing them with possible assistance, and monitoring the educational process at the department.

As part of the professional partnership, professional tours are regularly held to advanced manufacturing and energy enterprises of Ukraine including Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Dniprovska hydro power station, Botivska WPP, Tokmak Solar Energy LLC, Motor Sich JSC, Interpipe Steel, etc.

External relations of the department

To improve the level of professional training of graduates, the team fruitfully cooperates with colleges, production organizations, regional energy companies. On the basis of common scientific and educational interests, the department maintains close relations with Petro Vasylenko Kharkiv National Technical University of Agriculture, National University of Bioresources and Nature Use of Ukraine, Lviv National Agrarian University, Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic National University. The results of cooperation are constant participation in scientific and practical conferences and publication in collections of scientific papers.

The department has extensive international relations with educational and scientific institutions of Kazakhstan, Moldova and Canada.

Development prospects of the department

In order to implement the concept of organizing the educational process at the department and planning the teaching load of the department’s teaching staff that conditions the training of specialists at the highest professional and qualification level and ensures their competitiveness on the labour market, activates creative, professional and social activity it is necessary:

  • to continue improving the professional level of teachers;
  • to expand the opportunities for participation in national and international grant programs;
  • to orient the teaching staff of the department to the organization of the educational process using modern information tools and technologies;

to direct the scientific work of the teachers to be published in the scientific-metric databases Scopus and Web of Science.
