In 1969, the Melitopol Institute of Agricultural Mechanization was one of the first to establish a laboratory of electronic computers in Melitopol.
In 1990, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science was established on its basis. Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.S. Yeremieiev was appointed as the head of the new department.
Since 1995, the department has been headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A.V. Naidysh.
The opening of a new specialty “Information Technologies of Design” in 2004 makes the department a graduating one.
In 2005, the department participated in the program “Modern Software of the University of Ukraine”, which was implemented by Delcam plc (GB). In 2006, the department became a member of the Solid Works Academy program, which was conducted by Solid Works Corporation (USA).
In 2007, the name of the department was changed to “Applied Mathematics and Computer Technologies”.
In 2013, the department was renamed to the Department of Information Technologies, and the Head of the Department was Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.M. Malkina.
In 2016, the department was renamed to “Computer Science”. The acting head of the Department of Computer Science since 2016 was Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences O.V. Strokan.
From 2021 to 2022, the duties of the Head of the Department were performed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences S.V.Sharov.
From 2022 to 2023, the duties of the Head of the Department were performed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Technical Sciences Yu.V. Kholodniak.
Since 2023, the department is headed by Associate Professor, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences S.V. Sharov.
Currently, the Department of Computer Science trains specialists in the specialty 122 “Computer Science”. The staff of the department is constantly working to improve the educational process, takes care of strengthening the material and technical base and educational and methodological support, publishes in publications indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, professional publications of category A, B, participates in scientific and scientific-practical conferences of various levels.
