For more than a century, people around the world have celebrated International Women’s Day on 8 March.
It is a global day that recognises and celebrates the achievements of women while raising awareness of gender inequality and discrimination.
International Women’s Day is a national holiday in many countries. Thousands of events take place around the world, including marches, concerts, exhibitions and debates.
For example, in China, many women are given half a day off on this day. This is a recommendation of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, but it is not a law, so some employers ignore it.
In Italy, the 8 March holiday is called Festa della Donna, and mimosa flowers are a popular gift.
In the United States, March is Women’s History Month. A presidential proclamation issued every year honours the achievements of American women.
In Ukraine, 8 March is a public holiday and an official day off. However, during martial law, no additional days off are provided, even if the holiday falls on a weekday.
In Ukraine before the war, it was a day-off and all men, boys congratulated women, girls with flowers and lovely gifts.
The UN theme for 2025 is “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment”. It aims to empower the next generation as a catalyst for lasting change.
This year our higher education institution has free access to Kahoot is a game-based learning platform. The teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages Iryna Kryvonos and Viktoriia Lemeshchenko-Lagoda used Kahoot to create 2 quizzes containing multiple-choice questions, True or False questions for International Women’s Day.
The teachers chose self-paced learning – students took the test on their own, with questions and answer options appearing on their computer or smartphone screens. By choosing this method, the teachers set the date and period of time during which the test was open and available to every student who received an access code to the quiz on the portal.
The students of the Faculty of Agrotechnology and Ecology (21HRB, 31 GZ, 31 EK) took an active part in such unusual activity during last week. We are very grateful to all participants for their time they have spent on learning the information about the important holiday to show solidarity with women and girls.
We invite everyone to join other projects of our department!
