On November 26-27, 2021, the teachers of the Department Viktoriia Lemeshchenko-Lagoda and Olena Suprun took part in the work of the international scientific interdisciplinary online conference “Research and Scientific Written Speech in Ukraine and Germany / Online-Konferenz – Wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und Schreiben in der Ukraine und in Deutschland”, which was held under the auspices of the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) as part of an international project “Sur-Place and Specialized Language Courses in East Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe as well as the Caucasus and Central Asia 2021” with the kind support of the German Academic Exchange Service and the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. Among the organizers of the conference were German DAAD lecturers Kerstin Dalljo (Kharkiv), Anja Lange (Bishkek) and Kathrin C. Kompe (Lviv) currently working in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian partners.

The conference program comprised a number of topical issues, including the concept of science and research, challenges of Ukrainian and German science in the XXI century, scientific styles in Ukraine and Germany, forms and conditions of scientific publications in Germany and Ukraine. Researchers have focused on teaching the basics of research and tools for teaching academic writing, as well as preventing plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty in both countries as well as liability for violating the norms of academic integrity.

V. Lemeshchenko-Lagoda and O. Suprun hosted a workshop for Ukrainian and German colleagues on the topic “Collaboration of Business and Science while training Masters in Agricultural Management”. The workshop was centered around the peculiarities of teaching academic writing while studying the course “Business Foreign Language (English)” at Dmytro Motornyi Tavria State Agrotechnological University using the coursebook “English for Agribusiness” (authors O. Suprun and V. Lemeshchenko-Lagoda). The lecturers presented the peculiarities of the new modern Master’s program “Agrokebety” to the international community with a focus on the challenges that foreign language teachers face in non-linguistic universities which require the use of modern approaches to training future professionals.

The main points of the lecture concerned the following issues: the integration of business speech, professional language and academic writing in the course, teaching methods of search, processing and critical analysis of scientific literature, working with scientific databases, methods of teaching academic writing (scientific works of various genres: abstract, review, article, etc.), as well as training of future scientists for holding public speeches at scientific conferences (writing reports, creating presentations).

The work of the lecturers was highly appreciated by the conference participants, and the presentation of the coursebook received positive reviews.

Based on the results of the conference, proceedings of conference materials have been published.
