March, the 8th is one of the most popular holidays in Ukraine, which is widely celebrated in every corner of our country, but its content from the beginning of the celebration to the present days has undergone significant metamorphoses: ideological, honoring a woman – a leader and activist – it turned into a day of revealing feelings for women, tenderness and family values.

Outside the post-Soviet space, it is less popular, although much has been heard of it, and it is recognized by the UN as a memorable date.

But why did they come up with to celebrate this day and why exactly it happens on the 8th of March? What is it – a holiday or, rather, a protest? This spring holiday originates from the labor movement and has American roots. In 1908, 15,000 women in New York demonstrated, demanding a reduction in the working day, an increase in wages and voting rights. In August 1910, at a conference in Copenhagen, Clara Tsetkin, a well-known figure in the German Social Democrats, proposed the establishment of an International Day for the Struggle for Women’s Equality and Emancipation. About a hundred participants from 17 countries unanimously supported the idea.

In 1975, the UN General Assembly declared the 8th of March as a day to celebrate the achievements of women in all spheres of life and to protest against the remnants of inequality.

Despite the diversity of customs and traditions, this year’s celebration in most countries will be quite similar: due to the coronavirus pandemic, many events will be held in virtual mode.

That is why this year the teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages Viktoriia Lemeshchenko-Lagoda and Irina Kryvonos invited students to take part in an English-language project work in order to congratulate women with the International Women’s Rights Day remotely. Students had the opportunity to show their creative imagination and create greeting posters in English for TSATU teachers and students. After the projects were ready, the teachers decided to print them out and arrange a “card fair” of greetings to give wonderful words of wishes to all students and their teachers who work and study on the department floor.

The students of the Faculty of Agrotechnology and Ecology took an active part. Their posters – postcards with wishes of love, tenderness, warmth, understanding, kindness, beauty, joy, flowers and smiles since March 1 have delighted everyone who stepped on the floor of the “Foreign languages” department. The most sincere congratulations, of course, were from male students (Ivan Kryvonos (11CS), Valerii Prokopenko (11FT), Danylo Prosolov (21FT), Danylo Kushnir (21 GZ), and the female students were very active too (Anastasiia Vlasenko (11 GZ); Kateryna Horlova (21 GZ); Valentyna Katska, Yana Korobova, Diana Shekhovtsova  (21FT); Daria Akatova, Veronika Ivashchenko (31 GZ); Alina Derzhak, Oleksandra Dolynska, Karyna Vakasova, Alina Dukova, Miroslava Mykalo, Anna Rudakova, Kateryna Popova (31FT).

We are very grateful to all participants for their congratulations and warm, sincere wishes!

We invite everyone to join other projects of our department!
